Guest Post: The Top 5 Benefits of Living in a Small House, from Kristin Kline

Hey everyone, Kristin here.  I blog over at Husband, Wife, Blessed Life
When the lovely Katie asked me if I'd like to be a guest blogger, I was ecstatic!  So, a huge thank you to Katie for letting me be a part of her blog for the day.
Ok all, bear with me as this is my very first guest blog post ever!

I've been thinking about that word a lot lately, especially since we just recently moved [into a smaller house than the one we had before].

That word truly is all about perspective.

To some people, our house may seem rather large.
To other people, our house may seem teeny tiny.
To me?  It's just right.

Here are 5 reasons why I rather enjoy our small house.

1) not as much stuff.
I've always thought of myself as having "minimalistic tendencies".
Just ask my husband about this ... too much clutter sends me spinning!  I'm constantly going through stuff, trying to figure out what I can donate or give away.
Now that we're in a smaller house, we don't have near the storage space that we did in our last house.
I'm smiling on the inside.

2) it's cozy.
I absolutely adore evenings when my family and I get to snuggle on the couch in our cozy little family room.
Although we don't currently have a working fireplace, I love lighting candles [especially fall scented candles, these days] and curling up under the big fleece blanket to watch some TV, read a book, or chat.

3) way less cleaning involved.
Cleaning my house is the bane of my existence.
I catch the cleaning bug on occasion [especially after we travel!], but generally, I don't enjoy cleaning.  Especially dusting [anyone else with me on this one!?], as it seems to be a never ending job.
The good news is, in a smaller house, there's less to clean!
Again, I'm smiling on the inside.

4) spending less, saving more.
Overall, our bills are much less than at our old house.  We really like this aspect because on one income, we are still able to save a bit each month.

5) Togetherness.
One of my top Love Languages is "Quality Time".
Living in a smaller house has provided that for us.
We often spend a lot of our time either in James' playroom [while he's awake] or in the family room [once he's down for the night].
I love how we've grown even closer as a family since moving into this house.

So there you have it - the top 5 reasons I enjoy living in our smaller house.

[I'll have to refer to this list come winter time when we're stuck inside our tiny little house, I'm sure of it!]

  1. Oh man, the whole STUFF thing...I neeed to get rid of it!! Stuff is taking over my brain and my life! I need to have more of a minimalist attitude!

    1. I felt like I could've written #1 myself. I don't like having too much of anything; I definitely have the same "purging" attitude toward "stuff" and "things" as Kristin!

  2. I agree 100%!!! We just moved into a *tiny* house, with all our belongings in the smallest u-haul we could find, and not even filling it up completely. And it is awesome. There is so much to be said for downsizing and getting rid of excess. Loved this post! xoxo

    1. So glad you enjoyed it, Andrea! I loved it, too. :)

  3. And for me, "stuff" piling up around the house creates clutter in my brain and that's literally all I can think about/focus on until it's taken care of! Ick.

  4. I definitely enjoy the small house without much stuff kind of atmosphere. I like having minimal stuff--my siblings joke about the time when I said how much I enjoyed having a "nice, clean, empty refrigerator" at one point when we'd pretty much run out of food in the house. And the not having to clean so much is a huge benefit, too!

    1. I totally agree with you, Rachel!

And let's be honest -- who doesn't like a clean refrigerator!?
